Orissa gathered five points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Assam settled with three points in their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in an exciting draw at Khallikote College Ground in Berhampur today. Opening batsman HT Rathod and allrounder Arun Patel put up notable performance for Orissa.
Riding on a fine knock of 80 by Rathod and an useful 32 by Patel, Orissa compiled 188 while batting first. In reply, Assam were all out for 153 with NN Swamy and Patel bagging three wickets each for Orissa.
After taking 35-run lead in the first innings, Orissa made 152 in the second innings to set a challenging target of 188 before Assam to win the match. But the visitors could make 123 for seven when the play on the last day came to end. Patel and Bisuddhananda Jena hit 38 each for Orissa in the second innings.
Ashokananda Jena led Orissa for the first time in the Ranji Trophy. Pranab Kishore Das, Mohan Kumar and Bikram Mohanty of Orissa made their first-class debut in this match.
